No? Technically not crazy?
I understand your point, but in my humble opinion (and I
am not a lawyer) Apple should have been granted copyright
cover for its UI in the first place, hence subsequent UIs
would have copyright protection.

The fact that they weren't is a matter of history, but it
doesn't make me feel any better.

SoundJam wasn't covered by patent when Apple bought it,
presumably if anyone had copied the interface they'd now
be in trouble. Interestingly, if copyright did apply, Apple
would be covered for what, 75 years? With Congress
apparently able to extend that in stages indefinitely.

From memory, patent only lasts for 17 years. So though
patent probably provides broader cover, it doesn't last as
long.
