I was waiting for the Plextor drive. Partly because I like their hardware, but also because the Sony dual-format drive wouldn't drop below $280 until there was competition. For $280, you could almost buy one drive for each format. Plextor finally released the drive, and it was faster than Sony's. The Plextor street price is $220, and the Sony immediately dropped to $180.

The plus format will probably win, since:
- the media for both formats is the same price,
- single-format drives are the same price,
- dual formats are reasonably priced, and
- the plus format has always been faster.

The plus format was at 4x while minus format was still at 2.4x. Now the plus format is at 8x, and the minus format will not for at least 6 months. It will be nice to see the market won by the better technology for once.
