MultiCore
As the article states, multicore will be the only way a transition can occur. One core could 'natively' run another instruction set, and when a program that uses that instruction set is loaded, the core is handed the task. This method will allow hundreds of instruction sets (and if done correctly, they should be dynamically changable), and this will prove neat and useful, but ultimately, one instruction set will win out.

Transmeta had an excellent idea, but they were a bit ahead of the game.
