And look what happened
Now the x86 instruction set is emulated on versions of Windows & Linux that support Itanium through the use of the IA-32 EL software.

DEC told the world that the Alpha was better (it was) and that they could emulate x86 as well as Intel could run it natively. DEC went out of business. Intel bought the rights to Alpha and plowed them under.

Intel told the world that the IA-64 architecture was better (hmmm...) and that they could emulate x86 until the world made the switch. The performance on emulation sucked. Intel is left holding a party for every Itanic chip that ships.

AMD build a 64-bit chip that could run x86 natively. Intel ended up second-sourcing the AMD64 instruction set.
