- For a transition, how about keeping ONE core that has all of the legacey,

and the rest of the cores, still x86, but optimized, with all the legacy stripped out. That way, all of the newer software gets compiled to the new streamlined x86.
But, that would require cooperation, and much like Microsoft, Intel and AMD benefit from the restricted competition. They sure do not want a standardized architecture that is easy to implement, that would open up the floodgates of competition.
