The crazy race
for higher clock speeds has ran its course. The higher clock numbers were 'impressive' (to imressionable byers) but finally, performance/cost is the ultimate judge.

Intel should had focused much more on DESIGN of the architecture than trying to outpace the physics of VLSI. They ended up with a half-hearted IA64 implementation that, had it beeing more fully pursued, would had payed off very well in the long run. This is the classic marketing/engineering trade-offs. You need to know where and when to draw the line.

Now, it's "go back to the drawing board" for the chip architectures and back to board meetings trying to establish a tangible and viable long-term roadmap.

good luck.
