Sales and marketing cut
Awhile ago Apple started an ad campaign that it hoped would increase their share of the market beyond 2%-3%. At the time, I remember reading a quote saying that Macs needed a substantially higher share to assure the line could continue profitably.

I wanted them to succeed. Apple's example improves both hardware and software design.

But if they're laying off sales and marketing people, does that mean that they're giving up the effort?

Is it possible that they had to give up because they're splitting the ani-Microsoft market with Linux? And Linux prevented them from getting the gain they needed?

This article doesn't go into what's happening with Apple's strategy for Macs, but if my speculation that Linux is damaging Apple is true, then I think those with authority over the direction of Linux should respond by finding a way to avoid competing with Apple.
I don't know what that way would be, but the search should start.
