innovation
'Merriam-Webster defines "innovation" as: the introduction of something new; a new idea, method, or device.'

so the question is, the introduction of something new to *what*? the world in general or something more specific?

a feature that is new to a product can be considered innovative to that product.

very little in this world is *truly* innovative, using the extreme 'new-to-the-world' definition. in technology, the majority of os innovations meeting that definition were done by xerox parc, long before most of the current players were even conceived.

even the new use of an existing product can be considered innovative. to borrow from your cell-phone analogy, cell-phones exist. cameras also exist. combining the two together was innovative. giving that phone to someone is not innovative, but the product itself is, even though it is only the combination that is new, not the parts.
