OS X allows you to do what you want when you want. Granted,
games run through Virtual PC for Mac will probably not be
compelling but you can boot your PBook or iBook once and do
all the things you want by just opening the cover. You can also
run Linux apps, Windows and Windows apps and program in
Unix all from one boot.

So I would change your dream from "magine turning on linux
and booting directly to send and receive email, type a letter,
print out a document, that keeps all other services off and boots
rapidly. Boy theres a new idea. " to WHY KEEP REBOOTING all the
time? Have everything available INSTANTLY and WHEN you want
it.

It's already there, matey.
