Apple has a huge head startt...
One thing you have to say about iTunes is, it's one
clean slick product. I've seen my girlfriends 10 and 12-
year-old daughters creating Play Lists and burning
custom CD's with incredible ease. Plus they each get a
monthly allowance to the iTunes Store that they really
enjoy. Between iTunes and the iPod, Apple has a
terrific conglomeration of technologies. The AAC format
is very good quality sound at a 10 to 1 compression
ratio allowing me to put a hell of a lot of music on my
iPod or Computer without taking up a lot of space.
Apple has also been able to acquire the rights to a
huge amount of selections through its store and has
worked hard at finding and purchasing music very
easy. And now that you can get iTunes for both the PC
and Mac, Apple has managed to really hedge their
bets. Short of an exact rip-off, I don't see anything
coming close to the quality, style, and ease of use or
just plain cool of iTunes. And don't forget, there's almost
a million iPods out there with people who aren't going
to switch any time soon. You also have AOL pushing it
and HP shipping PC?s with it pre-installed. Apple isn?t
going to roll over like they did with during the Windows/
Macintosh war; they will do whatever it takes to remain
competitive.
