The beauty of modules
I used to have that problem on Gentoo, until I made a script that each time I compile a new kernel it searches portage for anything that depends on the kernel like alsa, nvidia, svga helper etc.. and recompiles them.

Seems to me that it should_be easier for them to work with the kernel.org devs on initial driver releases so that the manufacturer wouldn't have to maintain them and fix bugs when something changes in future kernels.

I had problems like that with the 3c990tx driver, had to edit header files etc. I was sooooooooooo glad when the typhoon driver was released.
