- Building a better mouse trap?

The question in my mind is will such a system add enough value to justify the cost? My TV works pretty much fine just the way it is, the digital recorder allows me to record (sort of) the shows I want, and the stereo connected to it does great sound. In other words the basics are taken care of nicely so what does a system like this need to do to excite me?
The problem as I see it, there are all sorts of things I might like to do, but most of them run into a problem with copyright infringement. No, I don't do "file sharing" with others, but I would like to be able to use any recorded media on lots of devices around the home and in the car/truck and use them in a format that works for me.
I believe that is the biggest hurdle for the hardware and software folks to deal with. How to sell something that doesn't do what the majoroity of buyers want it too. I say the majority because people willing to invest in this are not typical users that simply watch the TV, they want to do more.
