That idea of the future is not based in reality.

(1) You need extra equipment to do this with a regular phone...unless of course you see yourself hooked to your computer with a mic headset and speakers (and keep your computer on).

(2) You can't dial "normal" phone numbers without someone providing an infrastructure/service. They're not going to do that for free.

(3) The phone companies won't budge on this. They're going to protect their network at all costs and fight every inch of the way. They have the infrastructure, it's easy to use and they have the money and political muscle to put your lights out.
