What do these numbers reallly mean?
Ah, once again, the wonderful "marketshare" raises its head.
What does "marketshare" really mean? As far as I can tell from
the article, the numbers are based on "global handheld devices
shipments". Shipments, not sales. Not actual usage. That
means that every unsold PalmPilot sitting on a shelf at BestBuy
counts in these measurements. If company X decides they want
to claim a bigger marketshare figure, couldn't they do that
simply by shipping more versions of their product to retailers?
