Innovation isn't a magic trick
For someone who was a punch card machine operator in the 1960s, a computer operator in the 1970s, and a computer programmer in the 1980s, I can appreciate research and product development. So, I don't understand all this negativity.

I've worked computers costing tens of millions of dollars that were less powerful than the PC I'm setting before now and I don't complain about the couple of thousand of dollars I paid for it. Innovation isn't a magic trick, it takes time as each step continues on a journey to more useful inventions. Companies like Intel and Microsoft are working hard to achieve products that will be tools for uses unimagined today. We should applaud them, not criticize them.

If I have a ***** about anything, it would be at my age I will not be around to see the wonders the future will bring. Wonders like a computer without a keyboard or a mouse. The keyboard and the mouse, unlike the CPU, has unfortunately changed little in my tenure. More powerful computing systems being researched today will someday replace these carpal tunnel beast with a Star Trek like user interface. After that, who knows what science fiction will become science fact. Therefore, I don't care what level of Windows, or whatever, or how much hardware is involved as long as it can be used effectively.

The only fear I have is not how to consume the products of R&D but their sudden absence in a technology dependent populace. What good is multi-core development if we don't have the energy to sustain it -- unlimited, renewable energy. But even there, Intel and Microsoft are giving us the tools to research and, hopefully, solve such problems. You may think their efforts are of little use than to heat coffee, but I'll applaud their positive over your negative any day.
