Article a little off on a couple of points. . .
The article states: "With today's Power4-based pSeries Unix servers and iSeries midrange servers, IBM could create as many partitions as there were processors. "

Today's iSeries servers based on the SStar and POWER4 processors, configure more partitions than the system has processors. I currently run a 2-way SStar based system with three partitions, and regularly design 3-way POWER4 systems with 4 and 5 partitions.

Now, there is currently a limit of 32 partitions even on the 32 way POWER4 system, the 890. However, stay tuned as this will be changing to a much higher number with POWER5. The official worldwide announce is next week, May 4th.

For the iSeries the Virtualization Engine is really just a renaming of the Hypervisor partitioning technology we've been using since around 1999-2000. Yes the root of it came from the mainframe, however, what will be used with POWER5 on the iSeries and pSeries is very much an iSeries rooted technology which is now opened up to govern at the hardware level rather than software level as it does currently.

Despite the uneducated detractors (and some press folks as well) the iSeries really is based on open standards, and really is one of the most open systems in the marketplace.

Hold on, this is going to be a great year for the iSeries!
