Markups are a sham
I have worked in a retail environment and I have seen the markups. If you saw how much some of the margins on the bigger name brands, you would probably have a stroke. Even allowing for the other costs you mention, there is really a large profit there.

This is the same argument with CDs and other media. The urge to make a profit is overriding and it does NOT trickle down to the workers, who are the first to be cut whenever that profit is not enough to buy another condo on the beach.
