Still conveys advantage...
The corporate spying in question doesn't sound like it relates to printing technology, per se - most would probably agree HP has the edge in printer technologies generally over Lexmark, the builder of Dell's printers. Rather, it seems HP may have sought competitive advantage by knowing in advance the specs and price points of the Dell/Lexmark offerings. Knowing this would allow them to make sure they had comparable offerings to go head-to-head, and offer promos/rebates targeted at the Dell offerings. In other words, spying not to learn how to build better printers, but to better sell them!
