MS is the Overall Loser
You know, this is not the first time I've received word-of-mouth that AMD is losing its competitive edge. I'll have to research this myself and see what's going on for myself. This is important to me, since the Cell chips are out now, too.

Sun I don't see dying. I see Microsoft the real loser. With the release of Solaris as open source, Sun has joined the community of freely-available Unix-family operating systems. Now everybody seems to have their opinion. And with a certain level of Unix talent, you have your choice. It's like a berry patch now. Which free Unix OS is the one for the particular task at hand?

The ongoing costs of putting up with the security and quality flaws of Microsoft Windows exceed the initial investment of opting for a qualified admin to set up a Unix-family system such as Solaris, CentOS, Fedora, Debian, Knoppix, FreeBSD, etc., for the range of uses in industry, from cluster power to web and mail servers all the way to desktop workstations. Microsoft is increasingly uncompetitive in all areas, and the open source world is exploding with cutting-edge software that is free to anyone who simply knows his game. For instance, right here I have CentOS LiveCD on my laptop workstation for development work on a web project, Fedora for my dekstop connected to the Internet for research, and CentOS on my web server I'm conditioning for the upgrade in power I'll need soon. All this was free, literally with the servers costing me nothing but the price of the hardware, and the software on it is de-facto standard. And, of course, I have Solaris on my other power server I'll use for my company intranet as a gateway and portal with mail, intranet web, etc. No computer that's on right now is running the Microsoft OS because it's not useful for anything I'm doing today. It's a better business decision to avoid Microsoft if you can.

And remember, MIDP is the standard for cell phones, and Java is the open source de-facto standard for running the entire new market. Sun has maneuvered themselves into a position to explode, whereas Microsoft has nowhere to go but downhill to where it belongs.
