I doubt it is a lot of resource for intel
Any additional sales are good for Intel. If Intel can keep it's processors competitive with SPARC (right now they are faster) then Sun would have to move more servers in the Intel direction meaning even more sales.

So I doubt it is costing Intel much AND Sun is still a very significant server vendor. So I'm guessing the additional sales outweighs Intel's cost.

I also think you opinion about the future of Solaris (particularly now that it is open sourced) and Sun is with out basis at this point. It is too early to tell.
