It's not clear to me that selling chips to Sun is a huge burden to Intel. Intel will sell chips to whoever is willing to pay for them. That's how they make money.

This article is pretty short on detail. However, assuming that Intel becomes a significant part of the Sun line, it would seem challenging to develop, market, and sell products based on 3 different product lines. Sun once prided themselves on
having only 1 operating system and a processor family. Now they have have 3 processor families and 2 operating systems.
For each potential customer, you have to decide what you are going to sell.

As to your Linux comment (can't we have any discussion without bringing up Linux vs MS?), I don't think Intel cares if users run Windows, Safari, Linux, or anything else. They sell processors. They don't care if you make earrings out them, as long as you are buying their products.
