Too slow? Microsoft quite deliberately go out and invent stuff outside the standard (rather than submitting to and aiding the standard that they're leeching off) so that if some idiot web developer actually goes and uses that stuff, his web page will only run on Microsoft's software. They're not interested in making things easier for the developer.
