Interesting, all of your comments,
But, from my point of view, which is one of a person who has no computer training AT ALL, I see this happening in a big way.

I have 3 dependents, plus me and my wife, each with separate computers, plus 2 laptops which occasionally join the frey.

We didn't particularly care for the tennis shoe network (trading disks all the time), or wireless "home" networks, so about 5 years ago we started REAL networking. The method isn't important here, what is important is that it was done, simply, by a non-tech family.

Eventually we ended up with a central server, a parallel central backup system, and 5 cute, high powered, VERY cheap "terminals" which had all the computing power we needed on each. We put the money we saved into the network and CPU Power for each node, with REALLY nice, large LCDs.

No one was jealous of the others more powerful unit, and everybody had access to the central hub for everything that they wanted to make available from anywhere in the house.

Privacy - Boy, that one was touchy, NOT! We each have our own computer with its OWN hard drive, so anything that we want private is visible ONLY on the computer owned by the one who uses that data. Encrypted, of course. Tax records are MINE and my WIFE'S, no one else. Love that encryption.

We still use the hub for backup of that private as well as all other data, etc, but we can be private if we want to, public if we want to, and all shades in between.

I like the home server idea so much that, in a few weeks, after the newly announced Core 2 quad cores take their first price drop (probably June, actually) we will probably set up one as our newest, 3rd generation home server. Upgrading about every 3 years is our plan.

However, Vista, not being NEARLY ready for prime time, partly because it is so new, but especially because of its constant DRM cycle drain, will not be on the new server or any other machine. Maybe in a year or two, Bill, but not any time soon. (Hmm, maybe 3, since there is no need to rush.)
