Microsoft's innovation, if you are willing to call it that, has been bringing the technology to the consumer. Technically capable people do not have a problem and can use existing Windows, Linux, or even MacOS X to do much the same thing. But this is an appliance sort of product from the demos and the Linux vendors do not have the ability to market on a consumer appliance scale. It is not a technical problem as much as a distribution and marketing problem.

After a decade of trying, the best that Linux companies seem to be able to muster in the retail arean is the occasional low price offering gathering dust in some back corner of a store. To sell this kind of thing takes a front line company like Microsoft or HP or Sony.
