Tapes are subject to breaking and magnetic fields.
What we need is are disk platters that can be removed from the drive and stored. If the drive fails, get another one. Don't get me wrong raid helps a lot, but the media has to be removable, high capacity, fairly fast and high quality.

Tip: Iomega doesn't get the contract.

By the way, aircraft uses solid state drives that cost a fortune that are very reliable.
