De[pends on how critical the data is.
In one of my contracts last year, we had to back up 17 TB of medical data and find a safe way to ensure that we could recover it. For data of this capacity, you have a few options:

1) mirror the data (redundancy) somewhere (a second disk, second host, etc.)
2) tape backup (we used a 126 TB tape archive, they probably have it tested and the recovery process debugged by now.)

If the disk crashes and you are using either method, your data should be safe.
