RAID is only part of the solution
Raid will protect you from hardware failure but it doesn't protect you data from other problems like accidentally deleting something or getting a virus that causes you to restore from back up.

Still wasn't there an article about 6 months ago on 100 GB Optical disks. You'd only need 10 of those back up a terrabyte. So that's the same as having a Dual Layer DVD burner and 100 GB of Disk space. So the problem won't be any different with TB drives.

Still I'd go with RAID, it's actually quite affordable these days. Windows 2000 has software raid built not sure if XP home does though. Then MOBOs quite often come with RAID if you build your own and the cost really doesn't increase much, maybe $7 more for a MOBO with Raid. Buy it from a Major OEM and they will make you pay for it though.
