Gateway lost my support
The law firm over which I am the M.I.S. manager is a Gateway shop. We switched about five years ago after I got disgusted with Dell.

Gateway has made too many mistakes since the so-called acquisition of e-Machine. It appears increasingly clear that e-Machine took control fo Gateway. Bad mistake, e-Machine was known for junk computers, that were generally only minimally upgradable, and very bad customer support. I have now found that is the case with Gateway. The support has gone out the door.

I hope Best Buy and Wal Mart toss them out on their ear. Gateway had generally been a high quality company, e-Machine was not.

One interesting thing is that the "new" Gateway management, the former e-Machine management, have bet the entire company on keeping Best Buy, Circuit City, and WalMart. They loose one of those three, especially Best Buy and the company is finished.

My response to the e-Machine acquisition was to sell my Gateway stock. The stock price went through a very minor rise last month and since they announced the closings and the lay-offs the price is sinking. I think Gateway made fatal errors.

I suspect that on the next round of computers the firm buys I will return to building them as I did ten years ago. I can get top drawer quality parts, for less money, and better performance. When parts in those units fail we do the labor, hey that is what we were doing with Gateway and Dell. Hmmm something to think about.
