- Not so fast....

The PCs of the last 3 years are not so radically different that their speed holds up longer. Can you substantiate that assertion in any way? Software continues to ramp up its demands on CPU, memory, and I/O throughput. Additionally technologies are creating a demand for larger disk storage, which not everyone has caught up to. For example, many people are just now getting on the digital camera wagon, and storing photos digitally requires larger disks. And then there's the delayed effect of those who've had media-producing gadgets for a while now, and are just getting to the point where they need more storage. There are many factors. But the point is that there is enough new going on that has additional requirements to drive further sales in a shorter than 5 year cycle for consumers.
On the business side, I'm not buying that 5-year cycles are going to become the trend. We haven't gone to that here. In fact, I got a new laptop in early '06 after having had my previous PC only 2 years. Again, the reason is that software demands continue to ramp up. The cyclical costs aren't quite as much of a burden to businesses since they know how to depreciate these assets and get tax benefits by donating to schools or charities while there's still some value left in the equipment. At least...that's what we do here.
So...I guess I partially agree - if you're still using exactly the same software as you were 3 years ago...maybe you can keep going for another 2 years. I just don't think that represents the majority of use models. If businesses aren't changing what they do, aren't upgrading software, etc....I'd have some serious questions as to whether there's enough innovation or reinvestment going on. Somewhat dependent on the nature of the business, true...but more and more, these are requirements for success in any business these days. - Posted by: techboy_z Posted on: 12/22/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
