How can they not mention NetFilter and BSD ?
The Linux Router Project developed and enhanced Linux routing code that is used in thousands of routers deployed in live networks worldwide. But due to a lack of funding, the project officially disbanded in January 2003.

Ya ok, that was an effort to develop a standardised micro-linux stripped down specifically for routing. Just becasue the project died doesn't mean its fruits did! Alot of black boxes (some owned by Cisco) use Linux on their low end firewall/routers and between BSD and Linux they own the perimeter security space.

Hodson is optimistic that the XORP project won't suffer the same fate as the Linux Router Project. He said he and the other researchers are committed to keeping XORP, which is funded by Intel and the National Science Foundation, in the open-source community rather than taking the GateD approach and commercializing the code.

Sounds like a cool project, why carry the overhead of a full OS if you don't need it, but to imply that Linux and BSD are not at the forefront - there wouldn't even be a router market today if it were not for BSD. Early ZCISCO routers were Sun workstations runing BSD ... come on ZD, flesh out the story!
