Seattle Area Energy Savings Rebate
You can actually get rebates for energy efficient computers like you can with water heaters in the some areas. A school district was able to justify the replacement of old computers by taking advantage of rebates and calculating the energy savings over a period of several years.

Multi-procesor multi-core is a no brainer unless you are running software that is dependent on CPU speed. The energy savings come from slower clock speeds and shutting down processors when they are not needed. Older software that is not Java based or otherwize smart about threading will perform slower on the energy efficient machines. Java based software - like Open Office will perform faster on the energy efficient machines. AutoCad will render the initial image slower but once the image is in memory it is reportedly faster on the new machines.
