Not exactly...
Paul Allen's Vulcan Ventures invested $50 million in Ziff-Davis' 'TechTV.' However, the Web magazines, I believe, are a direct offshoot of ZD's publishing division (admittedly, with tie-ins to the 'TechTV' subsidiary), which is publicly traded and has 71% of its common stock in the hands of SoftBank, a Japanese banking giant. As you know, the Japanese are not particularly fond of American technology in general (after all, they trounced us completely in consumer electronics back in the 70's) and I don't perceive that they're particularly fond of Microsoft, either. Especially in light of the fact the Japanese government has recently banded together with several other Asian nations to create and standardize on a non-Microsoft OS. I perceive that this majority shareholder influence in Ziff-Davis will tend to counterbalance whatever influence Mr. Allen might have through 'TechTV' on ZDnet's technology coverage. And if that isn't enough, that wonderful little video clip offered recently on this Web site of Steve Ballmer blathering about Microsoft offerings being "more secure than Open Source," as if he had just finished huffing spray paint, just plain makes the Top Brass at MS look like delusional idiots completely out of touch with the realities of present-day computing. As someone in advertising, I can tell you that I would retire MS as my client before I would let Ballmer go out in public like that and make a complete jackass of himself and his company for the entire world to laugh at.

An interesting point to ponder, which should be embarassing to Mr. Allen if he is even aware of it: to advertise in any of the print publications in ZD's stable (28 wholly-owned magazines and 50 licensee publications), all ad materials must be created on--a Mac. Even for 'PC Magazine.' Who says that the universe's Inscrutable Irony Generator isn't up and running just fine?

As to the direct topic: this is indeed a grevious hardware glitch, and Apple needs to fix it pronto and make it right for customers who have suffered because of it. If Apple's previous track record is any indication, they'll probably make things right in short order.
