The world is not America.
First off, the $200 dollar machine you see at eBay is only available for that price because someone's trying to make room in their inventory, or they are trying to build brand recognition by accepting temporary loses, or it was some indiviual who is getting rid of an extra machine and considers any price to be a win compared to throwing it in the garbage. In any case, it's hardly a model which will hold for immense volume that would be needed to get a computer into every household in the world.

Now, a quick Google search of:

average income india

turns up http://cee45q.stanford.edu/2003/briefing_book/india.html at the first hit. While a few years old, the source seems a reasonably reliable one, and it states that the "average person in India (in 2003) makes approximately $500 a year." So your "cheap" PC is 40% of a yearly income.

Compare that to http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html, which indicates that the median household income for 2003 was $43,318. To put this in perspective, for such a person, they would spend $17,327.20 on a PC if they spent 40% if their yearly income. Hardly a minor purchase!

From a different perspective, every dollar the $500/yr person makes is $86.64 in the eyes of the person making $43,318/yr.

So while even a $100 pc is still a huge investment for someone of such an income, compared to a $200 unit, the price difference would be about $8,663.60 dollars to us!
