Wireless is NOT the way to go
Wireless is horrible. While it is good for SOHO markets
deploying it accross Salt Lake's terrain would be trickey. The
valley has a lot of trees and even Sprint Broadband Direct (a
wireless provider) is no longer taking new subscribers.

Wireless is subject to all sorts of environmental factors, rain,
snow, fog, TREES, buildings (especially those that are metal
framed) and solar flares. Fiber is subject to none of that
interference. Ever experience a drop out on your cell phone?
Deadzones? PLUS to boot wireless is SHARED BANDWIDTH
meaning if your zone has a hog in it to bad for you, fiber and dsl
are dedicated connections.

WiMax as quoted by No_Ax_to_Grind 802.16 is a cellular
technology and is meant to compete with 3G not fiber (http://
www.tmcnet.com/enews/041103i.htm). The last paragraph
states, "Many insiders argue that WiMax could pose a real threat
to 3G and other wide area cellular data technologies. They claim
that WiMax-powered hot spots could cheaply offer wireless
broadband access to citywide areas, bringing Wi-Fi closer to
cellular network levels of ubiquity.".
