I agree, there needs to be balance.
But I can also look around and ask, "what is the fastest growing industry out there" and hands down it's IT. In other words, innovation seems to be alive and well. In fact no one person can even keep track of it all, much less understand it.

By the way, you can't patent general knowledge like math or things with "prior art". However, I do agree on one thing, patent duration (especially in software) is far too long.
