Why patents.
Patents are just another tool that society has to compensate for the impossibility to have a perfect market environment. It protects the inventor from being overrun by the richer and more powerful. If natural market forces were unimpeded, a perfect market environment-which is impossible, then we wouldn't need anything to level the playing field. Intellectual property is such an abstract idea that it lends itself to patent infringement issues. I guess the majority of us don't believe we have any better options so the current solution is still in place. Who can trully prove who thought what first? Like the rest of life, it's just a crapshoot!
