But what if they are just guessing?
I can come up with patents that have no relevance now, yet may (or may not) be usefull in the future.
The way that patents are being used now, companies patent an idea or concept, broadly (very broadly) explain how it would work, and then hope someone will develop something along those lines so they can sue the pants off them. They don't even make a workable product (though, I must admit that Intergraph did have a product.

That's not innovation, that's making money off others sweat. That's rolling the dice with patents. 'Hey, lets' patent this idea and see if we can sue someone later'.
