- Voiding patents a bad Idea
-
Take the case of Philo T. Farnsworth (spelling?). He was the genius that invented television. How much did he make off of tv? Nothing. The broadcast industry (broadcasters and radio manufacturers) refused to invest in tv until the patents expired, since they didn't want to pay to license the patents. He was unable to develop the tv industry by himself, as he didn't have millions to do so.
Under your plan, the broadcast industry wouldn't have to wait for the patents to expire. They could just say "We're going to make our own tv's and sell them without paying him any royalties. We can do this because he's not making tv's and he didn't sell his patents to us for the $25USD that we offered."
That is not to say that I think all patents should be honored. If companies/people patent things and make no effort to utilize them or license them, They should at least be considered for voiding. Intergraph had utilized and licensed the patents previously, so AMD should be on the hook for something.
Software patents are patents I believe should be voided. They do indeed stifle innovation. - Posted by: Letophoro Posted on: 04/12/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
