Big factor!
You made a very important point with quality products you used with the AMD. AMD has been adopted by large OEM's as a "bargain chip" for low end machines. And, of course, this meant low end components were used with AMD's CPU. And thus most problems with AMD based machines were actually problems with cheap components and not the CPU. Of course, early dominance of chipsets by Intel (especially when Pentium class chips arrived) did not help AMD. When VIA began producing chipsets with performance and reliability on par or better than Intel's chipset, AMD had a solid platform, at least. Other peripherals being used were still low end, though. AMD trully had a hurdle to climb to overcome the "low end" branding. Now that they have the 64bit chips in production, OEM are starting to give AMD the chance to prove their quality by using quality peripherals. AMD and Intel both make good products. At this point in time, the both need a dependable OS.
