re: Chip competition is in Microsoft's best interest
>>Perhaps they used to only support Intel, but was probably due to the fact that other semiconductor companies simply cloned intel's chips back then. I think Microsoft has an interest in supporting the competition between AMD and Intel, not just one or the other.<<

Actually... Intel originally contracted AMD to make copies of their 286 and later 386 chips (waaaay back when!) to keep up with demand. Back then, the chips had to be pretty much identical with the original chip for it to work.

Then AMD decided to get a bit creative. First they upped the speed on the 386 chips to make them a bit faster than genuine Intel. They started really gettng carried away with things and did the same with the 486 chips. Intel got a bit worried. Speed was a factor. If AMD could make their chips faster, it cut into their profits. That is why Intel sued AMD to cease and desist. In 1995, they settled.

>>The more competition between AMD and Intel, the cheaper chips will be

The cheaper chips will be, the more computers people will buy.

The more computers people buy, the more potential customers Microsoft has.<<

Well.. One would hope so. But you're right on the last one. The more people buy, the better off for Microsoft. Though, you have to wonder how long that will be true.
