Big Iron and timesharing, deja vu ...
All the IT vendors dream of a return to the days of big iron, centralized control, and the high priesthood of MIS datamasters.

IT people remember those times with fond affection, but most others remember it as a time of pain and horror and helplessness. Pain, as MIS departments failed to provide decent levels of functionality and support, horror as budgets continued to rise without any measurable benefits, and all the time feeling helpless that there were no other options.

Using centralized or out-sourced services is still an option, but it's not the only one. And too many of the new-generation "service vendors" are still dealing with the same old problems of inflexibility, poor support, and escalating costs.
And in the end, there's room in the world for only so many "computing service providers", and the competition for them will be as fierce as it is in any other section of the IT industry. There's no cakewalk in store for Sun or any other vendor.
