Going a bit far weren't they?
Sony's claims that they did this as to make sure it met safety
regulations for the region are a bit shaky at best. Firstly, you'd
assume that they don't change their product from region to
region in any respect other than firmware for region encoding,
so why would the ones sold in Asia be any different than the
ones sold in Europe? They probably wouldn't since, since it
would cost Sony more money to have specific configurations for
every region that were hardware based since that would me a
restriction on what ones could go where.

That makes no business sense. I think it has less to do with the
alleged safety regulations and more to do with Sony wanting to
have total control over where their products are sold. That's
understandable, but I would respect it more if they just came out
and said that's the way it was. Besides, if their worry was legal
ramifications all they'd have to do is demand that Lik-Sang put
somewhere on their site and in the packaging that since they are
sold out of the intended region Sony takes no responsibility for
any harm caused by this and that all the legal responsibility for
such things goes to Lik-Sang.

No, I think this whole thing was just Sony wanting to flex it's
muscles and show people that things must be done Sony's way
or else.
