- Plenty of reasons I got my Dell.
-
...OS X, anyone?
Running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Thanks, but no thanks. That's an entirely subjective matter there, and Apple zealots never cease to argue that OS X is actually cheaper than Windows, unless one is using it to justify the obnoxiously inflated price of Macintosh computers.
...And if you just can't wait until Adobe puts out Universal binaries of its CS stuff, just run it native in a Windows install with Boot Camp (not that I would be thrilled about running Windows just to make Photoshop go a little bit faster - even under Rosetta, Photoshop CS2 is still plenty fast).
You forgot to put: "And for the rest of you, who do 3D work and need a real graphics card in a mobile workstation, get a Dell Precision."
Oh yeah, there's also the fact that it's not made out of flimsy, cheap plastic...
Dells are extremely rigid, well-built laptops, at least, in this generation (Previous era laptops were pretty ******). I can personally attest to that, my Inspiron E1705 is very well built. Inspirons probably aren't as rugged as MacBook Pros (I would venture to say they're sturdier than MacBooks, though), but Latitudes and Precisions are. Ever held a Precision M65? A MacBook Pro does not compare to that build quality.
...with horrible Dell customer support and a software bundle that gets in the way instead of adding value.
Fortunately, Dell also provides a Windows XP CD for you to use at your discretion. Support wise, Dell isn't that bad. I've had one bad experience on the phone with them, and no, I've never had to call them about anything regarding fixing stuff that wasn't genuinely my fault. My PC's have all worked very well, strangely contrarian to those Apple commercials...
Then there's all of that extra stuff - Firewire ports (400 and now 800)...
Dells have Firewire 400, and Firewire 800 isn't prominent enough to warrant putting it on any laptops. The only people who use Firewire 800 are Mac users.
...built-in 802.11a/b/g...
Most PC notebooks AS A WHOLE have that built-in. Dell happens to also offer Draft-N wireless, conforming to the 802.11n standard as it currently stands.
*cough*
...standard dvd-burner...
Dells have this. Also, the 15.4" Dell Inspiron has an 8x DVD+/-RW burner, while the 15.4" MacBook Pro has a 4x DVD+/-RW burner. Just FYI.
...and a better gpu on the Apple even if the Dell's is also discrete.
Apparently you haven't heard of that little bit where Apple underclocks the internal Mobility Radeon X1600's found inside the MacBook Pros. They're probably still a little faster than the Mobility Radeon X1400 that one can optionally order in the Dells, but they don't even begin to approach the level of the alternatively optional Nvidia Geforce Go 7900 GS.
Take a look, even a Mac with a faster CPU and twice the memory still only gets 2/5 the 3DMark05 score that the Dell gets. Better graphics card? HAH.
I guess you just forgot about all of that, right? - Posted by: A_Pickle Posted on: 10/25/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
