All depends on the application
All Hardware is prone to failure. Some are more fault tolerant than others. Google builds their servers(White box PCs) with clustering and failure in mind.

Other companies build servers, Mainframe or otherwise with failure points in mind and redundancy to prevent having to deal with downtime.

Application choice is really personal preference. I kindof like the idea of not coding for clustering so Fault Tolerant Mainframes are OK.
