same programs run 40 years later
One thing not mentioned - mainframes today will run the exact same object code that ran 40 years ago - despite hardware changes, operating system replacements, etc. Will anyone be able to say that about ANY program running today, 40 years from now?

Maybe it does not matter. I used to think that the answer was improved programming tools - you did not care if a program had a short life span, since it would be so easy to write a replacement when you needed it. But writing good code - meeting business needs - is what's hard. So if you invest the time to write a good program or system, don't you want it to have a long life span? What other system will offer that mainframe capability?
