IBM Power6 @ 4.7GHz a power hog!
Folks-I keep reading that Power6 will be lower power consumption than Power5.
This is probably true if comparing CPU's at same GHz (its a die shrink to 65nm
after all) but at the 4.7GHz, this chip will be freakin power hungry-why do you
think IBM calls it Power?. This is the Hummer of CPU folks-blatant disrespect for
energy challenges. Unless IBM can state what the power consumption of these
chips and systems are at the rated GHz, don't believe their marketing! In this day
and age of power challenges, the datacenter energy crisis, etc, IBM is going in the
wrong direction! Sure they've achieved higher than Intel Frequencies, but where
do they go now? Intel claimed 10GHz yet realized it was the wrong direction. Is
Power7 going to be the 10GHz pie in the sky? In this case, Power doesn't mean
performance.
