It's obvious to us. I don't know if it's obvious to the "outside world". She wasn't saying that IT was male-dominated, from what I can tell from the article, just that this was the case at HP. Her main point was the culture at HP didn't support women in leadership positions. It sounds like one of Fiorina's challenges was gaining the respect of the men around her. This may have been an impossible task. If some of the power brokers in her midst were just male chauvanists, then I can't imagine what she could've done within the limits of propriety that would've turned them around. On the other hand, assuming sexism didn't play a role, she may have not understood how to earn the respect of men in that position. Anyone in a leadership position needs to understand the personalities they're dealing with. A woman in leadership in this business is definitely going to need to understand what makes men tick. There's just no getting around that. The reality is it's male-dominated. I wish it were different, but that's the truth. Some might ask, "Well didn't the men need to understand how to get along with her as well," mutual respect and all? Ideally mutual respect would be there, but people in leadership have the responsibility of earning respect among their subordinates, assuming that's possible with a particular group. Mutual respect plays a role, but the buck stops with the leader in this regard.
