Corporate Culture is Vicious
It is fast paced, high stress, high intensity, and there are always those looking to point fingers and to get ahead. A lot of success, especially the higher up you go, is based on who you know and the friends you make (the schmooze factor). Although I use the word friends loosely... when push comes to shove, your "friends" will drop you like a hot potato, if it means saving their job or benefiting from your failings. I have seen it over and over. No doubt there is truth in what these women say, but then there are two sides to every story, and I am sure there is enough guilt to go around for everyone.
