PCI-e is the future in board-level communicaiton
but for systems who can survive with the half-duplex 1GB/sec PCI-X technology it wont mean much. With the large numbers of PCI-X cards out there it will take some time to clear all this stock out.

Another factor delaying deployment is that this is new technology and manufacturers need time get a handle on it.

Eventualy when the I/O in regular workstations and low-end servers becomes too demanding PCI-e will start being popular.
