More than just disk...
If this is similar to the IBM Virtual Tape Sub-system, then there is more than just disk. The disk acts as a cache for real tape. If the cache reaches a certain high-water mark, then physcal tapes are created.

Your back-up software on your server may catalog a tape and create back-up files to it. Typically, this action does not fill a physical tape out 100%. The virtual tape server can guarentee full physical tape usage.

Tape retention is done against the virtual tapes. This saves hours per week of operator (i.e. human) intervention in tape handling.

If you are backing up a big SAN, multiple 3Gb/s Fiber Channels are a must. This makes copying to virtual tape as fast as disk writing.
